Word Classification- Choosing The Odd Word

Word Classification:  Classification means to assort the items of a given group on the basis of a certain common rule which they satisfy and then spot the stranger or odd one out. In the question, you are given a group of certain items, out of which only one does not satisfy the rule  or is different  from other in some manner. The candidate is required to choose this one item which does not belong to that group. Few categories may be:

  • They can be synonyms, except one.
  • They can be name of countries, except one.
  • They can be currencies of different countries, except one.
  • They can be different name of rivers, seas, oceans except one among them.
  • Example 1 : Identify the odd element: Amethyst, Ruby, Marble, Sapphire, Diamond

    (a) Amethyst   (b) Ruby      (c) Marble      (d) Sapphire       (e) Diamond

    Answer: (c)

    Solution: On analysing the given words, we can see that all the elements except Marble i.e. (c), are precious stones. Hence marble is the Odd element

    Example 2 : Identify the Odd element: Cathedral, Mosque, Church, Monastery, Temple

    (a) Cathedral    (b) Mosque    (c)   Church    (d) Monastery     (e) Temple

    Answer: (d)

    Solution: On analysing the element we can see that all the elements except Monastery i.e. (d),are places of worship, while monastery is a place where monks stay. Hence Monastery is the Odd element

    Example 3 : Illustration: Identify the odd element: Engineer, Architect, Mechanic, Mason, Blacksmith

    (a) Engineer     (b) Architect    (c) Mechanic    (d) Mason    (e) Blacksmith

    Answer: (c)

    Solution: On analysing the element we can see that all the elements except Mechanic i.e. (c), help in building a house. Hence mechanic is the Odd element
